Cambodia has taken a step further toward upgrading its cross-border trade infrastructure, as senior officials met to advance preparations for the master plan of the Chrey Thom International Border Gate Office and related facilities in Sampov Poun city, Kandal province.

Cambodia is speeding up the creation of a detailed master plan for the Chrey Thom International Border Gate, to support regional connectivity and cross-border trade between Cambodia and Vietnam. In 2025, the total trade volume between the two neighbouring countries reached an estimated USD 12 billion.

On January 8, 2026, H.E. Dr. Hean Sahib, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), chaired a meeting to advance the design and planning of the Chrey Thom International Border Gate complex in Kandal province. Discussions focused on reviewing the proposed master plan for the construction of the headquarters building and supporting infrastructure.

Key considerations included the layout of customs units, designated areas for loading and unloading goods, facilities for relevant government agencies, and landscaping arrangements. The design concept is expected to follow the same model of joint inspection headquarters buildings previously developed at other international border gates.

H.E. Dr. Hean Sahib emphasised the need for close coordination among relevant ministries, institutions, and agencies, under the Secretariat of the Committee for Resolving the Impact of Frozen Land, to ensure the plan is coherent, detailed, and comprehensive.

The master plan will be submitted to senior leadership for review and decision, as Cambodia seeks to modernise border infrastructure to facilitate trade, improve efficiency, and strengthen cross-border economic cooperation.
