H.E. Bou Chanphirou, Director General of the Insurance Regulator of Cambodia, said Royal Group’s 900-megawatt (MW) liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant and special economic zone in Botum Sakor district are expected to drive economic growth in Koh Kong province, strengthen Cambodia’s energy security and create jobs for local residents. He made the assessment during a site visit to review the plant’s progress.
Construction of the plant in Thma Sa commune, Botum Sakor district, began in late 2024. The plant is scheduled to begin generating and supplying electricity in phases from late 2026 through 2027.
At full capacity, the 900MW plant will increase domestic power supply, reduce Cambodia’s reliance on imported electricity and help meet rising demand. Its ability to generate electricity around the clock will also complement hydropower and solar and support greater stability of the national grid.
The special economic zone is designed as a base for domestic and international investors in industry, manufacturing and related services. Combined with large-scale power supply, it is expected to attract new factories and investment and position Koh Kong as an investment destination on Cambodia’s coast.
Building and operating the plant will require workers across a wide range of skills, including electrical, mechanical and civil engineers, gas system technicians, welders, electricians, heavy machinery operators and construction workers. The project will also need staff for administration, accounting, warehouse management, occupational safety and foreign-language interpretation.
Beyond direct employment, the workforce on site is expected to increase demand for accommodation, rental housing, restaurants, shops and transport in Botum Sakor and nearby areas, creating new business and income opportunities for local families. New roads, water supply, power lines and transport services built to support the project will also serve surrounding communities.
Job seekers can follow recruitment announcements on Royal Group’s official channels (https://www.royalgroup.com.kh/), the official channels of its contractors, and the National Employment Agency. The companies responsible will announce the number of positions, hiring dates and job requirements.
