Authorities Step Up Enforcement Against Power Cable Theft at Telecommunications Sites

In recent times, incidents involving the theft of power cables and equipment from telecommunications base transceiver stations (BTS) have been reported in various locations, affecting the security and safety of telecommunications infrastructure and disrupting communication services. In response, relevant authorities are intensifying investigations, pursuing suspects, and taking strict legal action against offenders.

According to the authorities, the theft of power cables not only causes property damage but also directly affects the operation of telecommunications networks, potentially disrupting communication services for individuals, businesses, and government agencies, particularly during emergencies.

In recent cases, a number of individuals involved in power cable theft at BTS sites have been identified and arrested. Authorities stated that investigations will continue to be expanded, while individuals or organisations found to be assisting offenders or purchasing and handling stolen property will also face strict legal action.

Under applicable laws, theft of property may be punishable by three to ten years’ imprisonment and a fine of between KHR 1 million and KHR 3 million. Intentional destruction of property may result in two to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of between KHR 4 million and KHR 10 million. Those involved in purchasing, storing, or handling stolen property may face five to ten years’ imprisonment and a fine of between KHR 4 million and KHR 10 million. In addition, offenders may be required to compensate for the full value of the property and any resulting damages in accordance with the law.

Authorities are advising the public not to purchase or handle power cables or telecommunications equipment of unknown origin. Members of the public are also encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activities observed around BTS sites or other telecommunications infrastructure to the relevant authorities.

The authorities affirmed that they will continue to strengthen patrols, apply technical measures, and work closely with telecommunications operators to safeguard communications infrastructure and take firm action against violations in accordance with the law.
